Making the right choices in China
Feb 5, 2010
Cigarettes are one of the most popular gift choices for the coming Spring Festival in China, according to a China Daily story quoting a public health survey.

More than half of the poll's 1,200 respondents, some of whom were smokers, said they would give away cartons of cigarettes as gifts during the festivities.

The recipients of such gifts will range from family members to business partners.

The survey was conducted by the Jiangsu provincial center for disease control and prevention.

More than 68 per cent of those polled said they were fully aware of the scientifically proven health hazards associated with tobacco.

The deputy director of the Thinktank Research Center for Health Development, a Beijing-based nongovernmental organization, Wu Yiqun, was quoted as saying that expensive cigarettes were always the ‘safest choice’ for gift giving in China if you wanted to show respect.

Few people, including non-smokers, would openly resist the practice because of health concerns.
