Illicit trade threatens Romania’s Schengen plans
Feb 8, 2010—Romania's Interior Minister, Vasile Blaga, has asked the government to ban the sale of cigarettes and alcoholic drinks in duty-free shops, according to a Mediafax story.
Blaga told a meeting of the Romanian Border Police that the move was aimed at helping to fight the illicit trade in these products, though he conceded that it would not solve the problem.
Contraband cigarettes remain a major challenge for Romanian border police and Blaga said the trade was endangering Romania's plans to join the EU’s Schengen Area.
