Cigarettes the most popular item among smugglers
Jan 19, 2012—Last year, Lithuanian border guards intercepted six per cent more smuggled cigarettes than they did in 2010, according to a Baltic Times story quoting State Border Guard Service statistics.
But the picture is patchy with tobacco smuggling from Belarus having grown while that from Russia has declined.
Last year, border guards and other officials intercepted about 2.2 million packs of contraband cigarettes.
Meanwhile, tobacco products seem to be the most popular smuggling item. Last year, 87.4 per cent of foiled smuggling attempts were cigarette related.
