Zimbabwe has exported 35.5 million kilograms worth $223.4 million of Virginia tobacco since the start of the selling season, reports The Herald, quoting figures from the Tobacco Industry Marketing Board.
The average export price has been $6.28 per kg. The country’s tobacco exports so far exceeds the 32.7 million kg at $6.61 per kg realized during the comparable period last year. Zimbabwe’s golden leaf is currently purchased by 34 countries.
China remains the leading buyer of Zimbabwean tobacco. This season to date, it has imported 20.3 million kg at $8.12 per kg.
South Africa has overtaken Belgium as the second-largest buyer of Zimbabwean tobacco. Indonesia is the country’s fourth-largest customer.
