Guam raising tobacco purchase age

Lawmakers in Guam have passed legislation to raise to 21 the minimum age at which people may buy tobacco products and electronic cigarettes, according to a Radio New Zealand report.

The law will go into effect at the start of next year.

The Pacific Daily News reported that the US territory’s legislature had passed vice speaker Benjamin Cruz’s bill to raise the age from 18 by nine votes to six.

Guam’s adult daily smoker rate in 2014 was 29.2 percent – the highest rate in the US.
