The Tobacco Association of Malawi (TAMA) has asked tobacco buyers operating in the country to honor their agreements with farmers, according to a Malawi24.com story.
The association made the request after growers complained that they were being forced to sell their tobacco at auction even though their contracts were not finished.
The TAMA CEO Graham Kunimba said the buyers had to abide by the terms of the contracts they had entered into.
Kunimba said that the TAMA was consulting the Tobacco Control Commission on the matter, though the farmers had not provided a formal complaint.
He said the talks would help farmers who were facing challenges on the market.
Meanwhile, the story said: ‘there is high rejection rate pegging at 99 percent on the tobacco market which is a heavy blow to most farmers’.
