Display ban unlikely in Denmark

Denmark’s Social Democratic Party has proposed a ban on cigarette displays in kiosks and stores, according to a story in Dansk Handelsblad.

The party wants cigarettes to be placed ‘under the counter’ so that they do not encourage customers, particularly young customers, to buy cigarettes.

This sort of ban is already in force in some other countries of Europe and elsewhere.

The Federation of Retail Grocers in Denmark (DKS, De Samvirkende Kobmaend) says, however, that the policy has not had any effect on cigarette sales in other countries.

It had caused only extra costs for retailers.

The Social Democratic Party’s proposal is not expected to be supported by the Danish parliament.
