Smoore’s atomization platform FEELM has introduced a new sustainable product series, called Future.

Future  is made with recycled paper rather than plastic and its design integrates the product’s body and packaging. The device contains post-consumer recycled material and bio-based material, reducing plastic use by 60 percent and curbing carbon emissions by up to 58 percent, according to FEELM.

After use, the product can be easily disassembled. Consumers can separate internal components, such as the battery core, plastic and e-liquid tank, and recycle them separately.

“The series is our latest sustainable design concept, aiming to make it easier for consumers to dismantle and dispose of products responsibly, whilst solving the environmental problems caused by littering,” says Totom Lu, director of FEELM’s design team.

The solution was developed in part with an eye on upcoming regulation. The EU for example intends to require disposable vapes to have removable and interchangeable batteries as early as 2025, according to FEELM.

The company believes that countries should improve the collection and recycling of electronic equipment, and to make it easier for consumers to properly dispose of their vapes. In a press note, FEELM said it would welcome any initiative that could standardize the free collection of disposable vapes at the point of sale, as well as awareness initiatives to educate consumers on the importance of recycling their devices properly.

Philip Morris International has launched its latest heat-not-burn tobacco-heating system, Bonds by IQOS, along with its compatible tobacco sticks, Blends, in a pilot market in the Philippines. The company intends to further commercialize the product during the remainder of 2022 and next year.

Equipped with bladeless resistive external heating technology, Bond emits 95 percent less harmful chemicals compared to cigarettes, according to PMI.

“Bonds by IQOS represents another step forward in our ambition to replace cigarettes with innovative, science-based, smoke-free alternatives,” said PMI CEO Jacek Olczak in a statement.

“We know that no single smoke-free product will appeal to all adult smokers. Providing a range of alternatives to continued smoking—with a variety of taste, technology, usage and price options—is imperative and helps us to address a range of preferences as diverse as adult smokers themselves—ultimately encouraging them to leave cigarettes behind.

“Bonds by IQOS provides an opportunity to address consumer acquisition barriers for this segment, most notably up-front device costs and authentic tobacco taste satisfaction—providing further options of innovative smoke-free options to help ensure they do not go back to cigarettes. Through continuous innovation, we want to ensure that all adult smokers who would otherwise continue smoking switch and abandon cigarettes.”

According to PMI, Bonds by IQOS is designed to be used only with Blends tobacco sticks to deliver a variety of tobacco tastes. At the time of launch, Blends tobacco sticks will be available in five different flavors, including classic, menthol and aromatic. When fully charged, Bonds by IQOS delivers up to 20 uses, including three consecutive experiences. Bonds by IQOS comes in four different colors.

Premier Manufacturing, the consumer products division of U.S. Tobacco Cooperative (USTC), has redesigned the packaging for 1839 cigarettes.

“Premier developed a premium visual design that showcases updated brand colors, a cleaner overall look and the distinctive 1839 logo; all while maintaining some traditional elements to help make 1839 attractive on stores cigarette fixtures,” USTC wrote in a press note.

Medad Technology has developed a shisha pipe that it says is less harmful to health than traditional hookah, reports The National.

Unveiled at the recent World Vape Show in Dubai, the company’s Nesta pipe delivers a nicotine hit via ultrasonic vibrations, which could cut cancer risk from inhaling toxic fumes, according to Medad Technology.

The device’s patented algorithm reportedly produces mist droplets containing nicotine that are evenly distributed as they are inhaled.

Misting is distinct from vaping as it uses ultrasound technology rather than heat. The absence of charcoal and tobacco means the product generates none of the harmful carbon emissions or toxic fumes that are usually inhaled by users of traditional hookah pipes, according to the company.

“The challenge was to develop real, alternative products that were safer than shisha and e-cigarettes, not categorized under vaping, so a completely new product,” Medad Holding CEO Mohammed Al Mazrouei was quoted as saying.

The device has been approved by the European Union Medical Agency and by the U.K.’s Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency, according to Medad Holding.

It is under review by UAE authorities. The company is planning to also apply for approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

An estimated 100 million people use shisha, or similar water pipes, on a daily basis around the world.
