    In Memoriam: Kay O’Neill

    Kay O’Neill

Tobacco Reporter will be celebrating its 150th anniversary next year, and, understandably, no one today was present for its beginning. However, for Tobacco Reporter’s “modern era”—that is, when its headquarters moved to Raleigh, North Carolina, USA, in 1982—the magazine has been fortunate to enjoy an extraordinarily consistent existence in terms of its personnel. In fact, though many people have contributed over the years, we can easily point to a small handful who have been fundamental and foundational to the evolution of what Tobacco Reporter has today become. Our Mount Rushmore, if you will.

One of those people, without question, was Evelyn O’Neill. She was better known to the industry, her colleagues and friends simply as Kay. Kay joined Tobacco Reporter in 1991 and served numerous roles for the magazine and its family-like parent companies. On Jan. 17, 2023, after battling illness for far too long, Kay passed away surrounded by her loving family.

In her professional life, Kay did everything you can imagine on the sales side, developing relationships and fostering partnerships around the globe. She eventually earned the title of associate publisher, but to those who worked with her, her most important role was always being the “sales coordinator.” To translate that term, Kay was the buffer between the editors and designers back at the office who cared way too much about when the magazine was scheduled to go to the printer and the salespeople out on the road who were unfamiliar with the concept of deadlines. Kay handled each side with a magical blend of charm, humor and force as only she could, kept the peace and helped everything move forward with the big picture in mind.

As her former colleagues shared stories, it became apparent that Kay was the true definition of dichotomy. On one hand, she was a Carolina girl—that is to say, she came off as small-town country with the beautiful Southern twang in her voice—but she was as sharp and worldly as they came. She was equally comfortable networking with industry executives at five-course dinners as she was sharing a plate of Carolina barbecue with tobacco farmers at local extension meetings.

She wasn’t shy about mincing words and wouldn’t hesitate to kick you in the butt when needed but would protect you like a mother lion in her next breath. Each September, she would travel to one of the world’s great cities as part of the Global Tobacco and Nicotine Forum, staying in lush accommodations, then just a few weeks later, she would be in a giant tent standing over a space heater trying to stay warm as she worked a booth at the fairgrounds for the North Carolina Farm Show. Each of those moments was pure Kay. She was a professional, and she was a friend.

Those who knew her will not only miss her generous personality and infectious laughter but also her ability to disarm the moment and bring perspective. While Kay appreciated the value of hard work, she never lost sight of what truly matters: health, friends and family.

Kay is survived by her husband Mike, her children Laura and Ryan and their spouses, her beloved grandchildren and a group of grateful friends from more than three decades at Tobacco Reporter. She deeply loved all her family and friends, and her legacy will live on through them.

  • In Memoriam: Lusia McAnna

    In Memoriam: Lusia McAnna

    Lusia McAnna

Lusia McAnna, deputy chair of Women in Tobacco (WIT) and former managing director of Pinpoint Technologies, passed away Dec. 19, 2022, after a valiant battle with pancreatic cancer.

McAnna was born in Sheffield in 1955 to Czeslaw and Aniela Zychowicz. During World War II, her grandmother, mother and four aunts were deported from Poland to labor camps in Siberia. After two years of hardship, the family escaped and eventually settled in Britain. Of the 1.7 million Poles deported to Russia, only one-third survived, so McAnna was not exaggerating when she said, “I come from a family of tough women.”

McAnna grew up speaking Polish and English, encountered Spanish when the family followed her father’s work to Colombia for three years, and went on to study Spanish and Russian at Bradford University.

Her languages, along with her determination, equipped her for a career in international sales. Despite the challenges of being a woman in a male-dominated—and at times toxic—business culture, she quickly made a name for herself at Scandura Textiles.

In 1995, McAnna established PinPoint Technologies, a manufacturer of garniture tapes based in West Auckland, England. While it was clear that the industry would benefit from another source of quality tapes, McAnna knew that convincing the conservative tobacco business to try a new supplier would be a tall order.

With a combination of persistence, a highly skilled workforce and a relentless commitment to customer service, McAnna and her colleagues placed PinPoint firmly on the tobacco business map. “It took more than five years to get our tapes tested in some companies who now buy 100 percent from us,” she told Tobacco Reporter during a 2011 interview. Fittingly, Pinpoint adopted Tina Turner’s “Simply the Best” as its company song.

With her friend Elise Rasmussen, she established and ran WIT, an organization that continues to provide hundreds of women with opportunities for networking, mentoring and socializing.

At work, McAnna was as at ease with local staff from the Shildon area as she was with customers from the United States, Turkiye, Japan and elsewhere. When Pinpoint Technologies eventually closed, McAnna fought for a good redundancy package and offered valuable career advice to her employees.

To climb the ladder as a woman in business, McAnna once told a WIT audience, you need to be committed and work extremely hard. To prosper and stay sane, however, you also need a strong sense of humor and take time to de-stress. “If it stops being fun, get out and do something else, as life is much too short to waste,” she noted.

The International Tobacco Growers’ Association (ITGA) has named José Javier Aranda as its new president and Adam Gordon Strong as its new vice president, the organization announced in a press note.

The appointments came during the group’s annual general meeting Oct. 26–29 in Castelo Blanco, Portugal.

The gathering was the first in-person annual meeting in two years. The previous two events were held online due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

During the meeting, growers called for greater inclusion in consultations shaping the future of the sector, such as those conducted by the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.

While tobacco prices have generally been up due to crop shortages in key markets, growers around the world have had to contend with skyrocketing inflation and rapidly rising costs of production.
