The Cigar Association of America (CAA) has hired a new president.

David Ozgo will be the new president of the CAA, marking the third change in leadership over 30 years. Ozgo was senior vice president of economic and strategic analysis at the Distilled Spirits Council (DISCUS) for 20 years. Ozgo takes over from longtime CAA President Craig Williamson, who last year announced his retirement.

“David has demonstrated the ability at DISCUS to develop data-driven solutions to industry issues, to successfully deliver the industry’s message in different forums and mediums, and to work constructively with various segments of an industry whose members vary greatly in size and product portfolio. These are precisely the skills CAA and the cigar industry need to navigate through current and upcoming regulatory and legislative challenges” said Javier Estades, chairman of the board of the CAA and president of Tabacalera USA, in a statement.

Ozgo said he “couldn’t be more excited to work in such an outstanding industry, one with issues and opportunities similar to those in the distilled spirits industry and with such a strong association. I’m honored and humbled by the board’s confidence in me.”

Estades also praised Williamson, saying “in almost two decades with CAA, the last 10 years as president, he has been a tireless advocate for the entire cigar industry. Many of our industry’s successes have resulted from his hard work; we are grateful for his dedication and wish him well in the future.”

Ozgo will assume his position on Dec. 6.

    Robert Califf

U.S. President Joe Biden today announced that he would nominate Robert M. Califf, a former commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, to lead the agency again, reports The New York Times.

A cardiologist and long-time consultant to drug companies, Califf ran the FDA during the last year of the Obama administration

“Dr. Califf is one of the most experienced clinical trialists in the country, and has the experience and expertise to lead the Food and Drug Administration during a critical time in our nation’s fight to put an end to the coronavirus pandemic,” Biden said in a statement.

Califf has been a forceful advocate for tobacco control; before he was the FDA commissioner, he was the agency’s deputy commissioner for medical products and tobacco. In an appearance with other former commissioners this year, he said, “I have never seen more capable or nastier lawyers than what I experienced in trying to deal with the tobacco industry. It was awesome and quite frightening for public health.”

After stepping down as the vice chancellor for clinical and translational health at Duke University, Califf has worked as a senior adviser to Verily Life Sciences, a health technology firm, and its sister company Google Health. Califf, who remains an adjunct professor of medicine at both Duke and Stanford University, is on the corporate board of Cytokinetics, a biopharmaceutical company, according to its website.

Califf said he was honored to be nominated for the position “at a critical time for our country,” adding, “There’s a lot of work to do, and if confirmed I look forward to rejoining the great team at the FDA to help in their inspiring mission to serve the public.”

The FDA has had seven different commissioners, including Califf, since 2012, when Margaret Hamburg left the post.

Biden Eyes Robert Califf as FDA Head

    Robert Califf

U.S. President Joe Biden is likely to nominate Food and Drug Administration veteran Robert Califf to lead the agency, reports The Washington Post. A cardiologist who teaches at the Duke University School of Medicine, Califf was the FDA’s deputy commissioner for medical products and tobacco before leading it from February 2016 to January 2017.

The FDA has been without a permanent chief since President Biden took office. Its acting commissioner, Janet Woodcock, is nearing the end of the term that acting officials are allowed to serve.

While some praised Califf as a strong and experienced candidate, others criticized his ties to the pharmaceutical industry.

“Rob Califf would be a strong, experienced and effective commissioner,” former FDA Commissioner Mark McClellan was quoted as saying by Politico.

“The country desperately needs an FDA leader who will reverse the decades-long trend in which the agency’s relationship with the pharmaceutical and medical device industries has grown dangerously cozier—resulting in regulatory capture of the agency by industry,” countered Michael Carome, director of Public Citizen’s Health Research Group. “Califf would not be that leader.”
