After a decade of operating under the Essentra umbrella, Filtrona is back as an independent company.

    By Stefanie Rossel

For decades, it was a household name in the tobacco industry. Now it’s back: Filtrona. Having operated as Essentra Filter Holdings since 2013, the specialty filter manufacturer was sold to a private equity firm last year and is now in the process of rebranding.

“The Filtrona name has a rich legacy of innovation supported by strong industry partnerships, so we felt it was only right to build on what our partners were already familiar with,” says Filtrona’s CEO, Robert Pye. “We have developed a new logo and branding program and will be rolling that out in the coming weeks to rejuvenate the brand and give it a modern look and feel.”

The company’s head office will remain in Singapore. Filtrona currently has more than 2,000 employees and is present in 120 markets. The company operates 11 manufacturing facilities across Europe, America and Asia. It also has three innovation centers, an accredited laboratory and a center of excellence focused on sustainability.

According to Pye, 2022 was a “very solid year” for the business despite the challenges involved in completing the sale and unforeseen issues such as the war in Ukraine, which disrupted global supply chains. Pye says the company achieved outstanding double-digit growth last year. Under new leadership, the company’s focus remains on increasing its market share, particularly by expanding in China, Asia, the Middle East and Africa—where the tobacco industry continues to grow—while driving profitability and transforming its business through innovation.

“The Filtrona name has a rich legacy of innovation supported by strong industry partnerships, so we felt it was only right to build on what our partners were already familiar with.”

    Chinese Venture

In 2020, a filter joint venture (JV) was established with the State Tobacco Monopoly Administration in Xiamen, China, with China Tobacco Fujian Industrial Co. Its shareholders are Essentra (now Filtrona) and three Chinese tobacco companies in Shanghai, Guangxi and Hunan. The JV manufactures specialist filters at the new facility in Xiamen in Fujian province. It is also at this location that a China Development Center for the introduction of advanced filter solutions has just opened.

China is one of the last growth markets for combustible cigarettes. “We are delighted with the progress made at the China JV despite seeing many challenges since we held the opening ceremony in January 2020,” says Pye. “The project has been a remarkable success with commercial operation starting in July 2021, with the China Development Center recently established at the end of 2022. The partnership continues to grow capacity and capability and has already created a promising pipeline of innovative projects serving the Chinese market. We look forward to further growth as we introduce our proprietary filter technology to the market.”

While the tobacco industry is in the midst of an unprecedented transformation with sales of combustible cigarettes stagnating and those of next-generation products rising, Pye sees significant opportunities in the sector. “It is a trillion-dollar* market globally, and we have large market penetration,” he says. “Whilst the total market volume for combustibles is declining, the demand for filter solutions that offer differentiation remains robust. The use of more complex filter specifications continues to grow proportionately in several important markets. Filtrona is also active in the heated-tobacco segment with design, testing and manufacturing of filter solutions. In addition, Filtrona is leading the way forward with sustainable filter solutions, which is becoming increasingly relevant across the tobacco market.”

Filtrona benefits from being the only global, independent partner capable of designing, testing and manufacturing innovative filter solutions, Pye points out, with Filtrona’s laboratory being one of the few globally accredited independent scientific services for tobacco filtration.

“In the past, we had a pivotal role in the setup of standards for combustibles through our accredited laboratory,” he notes. “Today, we are assuming a significant role in the setup of global standards for next-generation products (NGPs), including e-cigarettes and heated-tobacco products.”

Filtrona benefits from being the only global, independent partner capable of designing, testing and manufacturing innovative filter solutions.

    Partner in Transition

Aware that the tobacco industry is changing, Filtrona’s vision is to support its partners in their transition by continuing to deliver quality and innovation. As an example, Pye mentions the research and development Filtrona has conducted for its ECO range of sustainable solutions, which are plastic-free and biodegradable. The ECO range includes sustainable solutions for tear tapes used in packaging. The recently launched Rippatape Halo is a paper-based tape for the e-commerce packaging market. “Brands are seeking plastic-free solutions, and Filtrona is delivering on all fronts,” says Pye.

The company appears to be well placed to meet growing demand for plastic-free, biodegradable filters driven by legislation such as the European Union’s Single-Use Plastics Directive (SUPD). While cigarette butts have been exempted from the SUPD for the time being, a provisional agreement in the legislative process encourages the development of sustainable alternatives to tobacco product filters containing plastic through the introduction of extended producer responsibility (EPR), an application of the polluter-pays principle. EU member states have until Dec. 5, 2023, to set up EPR schemes for tobacco filters that contain plastic.

Research conducted by Filtrona reveals that in 75 percent of countries, smokers are more eager to positively impact the environment than the general population. According to Pye, “This gives us significant opportunity to innovate and meet these evolving consumer needs.” Pye adds that Filtrona is investing significantly in paper-based filters with improved sensory performance, specifically taste.

For veterans of the tobacco industry, paper-based filters are a familiar concept; they were standard until the 1950s before the first commercial cellulose acetate filters arrived on the market. “Interestingly, current ECO ranges are loosely based on the first paper filters to arrive on the market, so our long heritage in paper-based filters is highly relevant to the challenge of finding sustainable solutions for today’s market,” says Pye.

“Whilst the total market volume for combustibles is declining, the demand for filter solutions that offer differentiation remains robust.”

    Opportunities Ahead

Going forward, Pye expects Filtrona to increasingly focus on consumer customization and modularity. “Capsule flavors are likely to be high on the design agenda, allowing the user to pick type and flavor as well as choosing when to crush the capsule. Japan and South Korea are well-established low-tar markets, with a significant slim/super-slim segment. We see this trend growing in other parts of Asia.

According to Pye, increasing sales of tobacco-heating devices and other NGPs underscore an appetite for innovation that should benefit the company. Filtrona offers a dedicated range of filters for heated-tobacco products.

“Keeping a close eye on new products launching into the market, we see a fresh wave of innovation in areas such as organic, additive-free and sustainable tobaccos. This further underlines and substantiates the relevancy of our ECO range of filters,” says Pye.

Filtrona, he says, is looking forward to supporting its customers to transform and grow. “It’s an exciting time for the industry, and we’re proud to play our part,” Pye says.

    Essentra Filters Rebrands as Filtrona

Following the announcement about a change of ownership, the former filters and tapes businesses of Essentra will now begin the process of rebranding as Filtrona.

“This is an exciting time for our business, marking a new chapter in our journey to build a global market-leading company that supports our partners to transform and grow,” said Filtrona CEO Robert Pye in a statement.

“Many of our customers and suppliers will know that Filtrona was the company name prior to rebranding to Essentra plc. Having talked to them about our plans, it was clear that the Filtrona name represented a rich history of innovation and partnership. It was only right that we adopted the brand again, which had such a strong foundation, and gave it a fresh contemporary design to take us forward.”

With its rebrand well underway, the business enters 2023 with exciting plans for the future.

“Both the tobacco and packaging industries are focused on driving innovation in response to ever-changing consumer preferences,” says Pye. “Our customers therefore need global partners that are investing in the future of their business.

“At Filtrona, we now have a truly global presence with facilities in all major markets worldwide supported by a 2,000-strong team of talented employees working across our 11 manufacturing locations, 3 innovation centers, an accredited laboratory and a center of excellence focused on sustainability. Our mission is to be a responsible, customer-focused innovation leader creating excellence in sustainable solutions for today and tomorrow. We look forward to delivering on this commitment.”

“We are delighted to welcome Filtrona into our diverse portfolio,” said a representative of the new shareholder. “The business has a rich heritage in providing innovative solutions to a well-established customer base with a global footprint, high quality people and exciting prospects. We continue to support our partners through the next phase of growth relying on our combined expertise in identifying and unlocking value creation opportunities.”

Essentra has sold its filters and packaging businesses and appointed a new CEO.

In a statement released Oct. 3, the company said it had disposed Essentra Filter Holdings to Frank Acquisition Four, which is part of Centaury Management and owned by the investment office of the Markus family.

The deal, which is expected to complete Jan. 31, 2023, values the filters business at approximately £262.1 million ($301 million). For the year ended Dec. 31, 2021, filters delivered adjusted operating profit of £28.2 million.

Essentra’s packaging division was sold to the Mayr-Melnhof Group for £312 million. The sale to Mayr-Melnhof excluded Essentra’s Indian packaging business, which represents less than 1 percent of the group revenues and was purchased by BBM Bommidala.

Paul Forman will step down as CEO on Dec. 31, 2022. He will be succeeded by Scott Fawcett, currently the managing director of Essentra’s components division. Fawcett will join the board on Jan. 1, 2023.

The sale of the filter business follows a strategic review launched in October 2021.

“The sale of filters marks the final step of our journey to become a pure-play components business,” said Forman. “Essentra has a bright future as a leading global manufacturer and distributor of components with a clear strategy and significant opportunities to accelerate growth and expand market share.

“This transaction strengthens Essentra’s balance sheet and enables the group to return a meaningful portion of the proceeds to shareholders whilst maintaining the flexibility to invest in organic and inorganic growth.”

Essentra Tapes has expanded its ability to serve the paper and board industry with the launch of its new SF-AS DH1 sheet fed applicator.

The tape applicator system was developed by Essentra Tapes’ in-house team of experts and facilitates efficient tape application in the sheet-fed manufacturing process.

The system can run automatic rapid stop/start performance on tape widths from 4 mm–25 mm and at compatible production line speeds. Crucially, it represents a sheet-fed solution that can rival continuous feed. The SF-AS DH1 can also be optimized for use on new and existing packaging lines and boasts a fully electronic interface as standard.

Designed and manufactured in a modern facility in Nottingham, U.K., the system is capable of running two applicator heads simultaneously, meaning RippaTape can be applied alongside release liners or double-sided tapes.

“Our vision was simple—to create a simple-to-operate, easy-to-integrate applicator, which addresses the tape application needs of sheet feed manufacturing and makes light work of creating e-commerce solutions,” said Ian Beresford, Essentra Tapes’ head of marketing and development.

“Our renewed investment into applicator technology and field engineers is the first of several important market interventions we hope to make between now and the end of the year.

“With prospective and existing customers increasingly looking to clean up operations and be more efficient, we’re confident our new sheet feed applicator can deliver a quality tape application every time.”

With modular assembly, easy integration, simple tape setup and renowned technical support and aftercare, the tape solutions provider says it is already fielding inquiries about this new plug-and-play solution.

Essentra Tapes is expanding its global sales team.

The appointments come as the post-pandemic packaging sector is buoyant, seeing heightened demand for enhanced direct-to-consumer packaging to fulfill the needs of increasingly e-commerce-focused brands, according to a company press release.

“As the packaging sector is seeing increasing demand, we are seeing an explosion of interest in our innovative tape solutions,” said Christopher Morgan, global sales director at Essentra Tapes. “With our industry being so competitive at the moment, particularly in terms of direct-to-consumer e-commerce packaging solutions, converters and brands know that the opening experience is a key driver of repeat business.

“We are delighted to welcome so many new members to the Essentra team to help us provide excellent service to all our customers, new and old. We are seeing particular spikes in demand across the APAC [Asia Pacific] region for all of our tape solutions—not just easy-open tapes but reclosing and authentication tapes too. But generally, our global operations are all scaling up, which is good news for all our customers worldwide.”

The appointments include new regional sales managers in the U.S., Brazil and APAC region along with other hires on the EU team. One of the key aims of the company is to drive continued growth in its tape applicator business. Morgan added, “Web and sheetfeed applicators are key to our growth and to the growth of our converter customers. It’s an exciting time for our business, as the applicator business is already growing rapidly, and we expect our talented new sales managers to take that growth to the next level.”

  • Pure Play

Filter manufacturers consider their strategies in an increasingly challenging environment.

    By Stefanie Rossel

In October last year, Essentra fueled speculation about the future of its filter business: The Singapore-based company, which manufactures plastic caps, work-holding clamps, fasteners and knobs, said it was studying strategic options for two of its three divisions, cigarette filters and packaging, in an attempt to become a “pure play” components business over time. The review is expected to conclude by the end of June 2022 at the earliest. Since the announcement, the company has appointed several new people to key positions, including Robert Pye as Essentra Filters’ managing director.

    SK Low

“A strategic review normally covers the full range of strategic options for a business, i.e., the best structure for that business to reach its full potential and deliver value for shareholders,” explains Seng Keong Low (SK), global marketing manager at Essentra Filters. “These reviews can include a number of potential outcomes including sale, demerger and other outcomes. We don’t yet know what the outcome of the filters review will be, and no decisions have been made regarding any of the divisions. The filters business will still be in operation, just that it may or may not be under the banner of Essentra pending the outcome of the strategic review. The most recent appointments to the global filters leadership team are longtime filters leaders, which were decided before the announcement of the strategic review.”

According to the company’s 2021 pre-close trading update, the filter division performed well in the fourth quarter of 2021, with revenue up 22.3 percent during that period. “The division continues to benefit from higher volumes from outsourcing contracts and a strong performance in Europe,” the update said. “Further progress has been made in the delivery of its ‘game changers’ with the China joint venture continuing to gain momentum after successful commencement in June. Our range of proprietary eco and heated-tobacco products continue to attract increased interest. The number of projects underway continues to grow.”

At the end of 2019, Essentra announced the establishment of a joint venture in China, China Tobacco Essentra (Xiamen) Filters, which launched in June 2021. Shareholders in the joint venture are Essentra with 49 percent, China Tobacco Fujian Industrial Co. with 21 percent, and three Chinese investment management companies holding ten percent each. The JV manufactures specialist and next-generation filters locally at a new facility in Xiamen in Fujian province.

    Tackling Logistics

While awaiting the outcome of Essentra’s strategy review, filter manufacturers must navigate the ongoing global logistics crisis, which has led to a shortage of shipping containers, significant in freight rate hikes and delays in the supply chain. “We have been working closely with all partners covering long-term plans that required more accuracy than before,” says Hyunyoung Park, sales and business development manager at Taeyoung Industry Corp. in South Korea. “Nevertheless, other activities, such as keeping a high level of stock or production capacity build-up, can help to mitigate the delivery issue. However, it is affecting factory operation severely.”

Essentra says it is experiencing extended lead times on deliveries from many suppliers. “To ensure supply continuity, we are working several BCP (business continuity planning) plans, e.g., holding more safety stocks, working on finding more local solutions, etc.,” says SK. “To minimize supply disruption and delay to our customers, we are doing additional pre-build where possible, making advance bookings for deliveries and driving more end-to-end synchronization of our materials planning with finished goods delivery.”

In addition to supply chain challenges, the price of raw materials, including wood, has risen significantly due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Wood, of course, is the basis of cellulose acetate tow used in cigarette filter production. “We have seen increases across our raw materials as well as other commodities, from packaging materials to spare parts,” says SK. “The increase in wood prices has affected our plug wrap suppliers, acetate tow suppliers, packaging and pallet suppliers. We are also seeing significant increases in power prices.” Because of these developments, Essentra Filters had to raise prices in 2021. “We have to find the right balance in accepting and passing on any price increases and constantly evaluate our positions with both suppliers and customers given any potential changes in the pandemic situation around the world,” says SK.

Park has also observed an impact on prices due to the logistic and raw material situation. “Raw material price is affecting not only our factory operation but [those of] other manufacturers as well. However, the cost of logistics is underlying geographical influences, which made it difficult for the export business and increased chances to find alternative suppliers for cost saving or minimizing cost impact, and these activities will concern all manufacturers involved in the cigarette business except major players.”

    Growing Importance

Another theme affecting the filter sector is sustainability. In July 2021, more parts of the European Union’s Single-Use Plastics Directive entered into force. While cigarette butts have been exempted from the rules for the time being, a provisional agreement in the legislative process seeks to further encourage innovation in the development of sustainable alternatives to plastic-containing tobacco filters through the introduction of extended producer responsibility (EPR).

EU member states have until Dec. 5, 2023, to set up EPR schemes for tobacco filters, but to date, there is no implementation guidance for member states. Since July 3, 2021, all packs of filtered tobacco products in the EU have been required to display a pictogram against littering.

Legislators in other jurisdictions are considering similar measures. In February 2022, Californian lawmakers introduced a bill that would ban the sale of single-use cigarette filters and vapor products. Under the bill, sellers would risk fines of $500 per violation, defined as the sale of one to 20 items. Ninety percent of the approximately 12 billion cigarettes sold in California each year are filtered. The state spends millions of dollars annually on cleaning up cigarette litter, according to proponents of the ban.

“Sustainability has always been important to us at Essentra Filters, and we have long had nonplastic filters in our product portfolio,” says SK. At the end of last year, the company added two new varieties to its sustainable filter range: the ECO Active Filter, a plastic-free alternative to active carbon acetate filters that is 100 percent biodegradable, and the ECO Flute Filter, a nonplastic alternative to the company’s Combined Performance Superior Filters. The design of the Flute Filter is customizable for length, circumference, pressure drop and flute length and can be combined with other filter segments. “Our new ECO range is currently the largest step change in our sustainability efforts, and with an increasing number of customers asking us about sustainable, nonplastic filters, we are confident that investing our innovative efforts in sustainability is the correct strategy,” says SK.

Park, who in a previous interview mentioned that Taeyoung’s research and development department was working on filter development with nonacetate tow and carrying out studies on the replacement of conventional filter materials, said that the company had made progress with that initiative. “However,” he added, “market feedback is more important for actualization. I believe this kind of development is continuing under rapidly changed business circumstances including environment, social, governance criteria.”
