    Sustainable position

Iggesund Paperboard’s parent company, the Holmen Group, has been placed on the Global 100, an index of the hundred most sustainable corporations in the world. Holmen ranks 21 and is apparently the only company from the forest industry on the list.

The Global 100 list is announced each year at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

The index has been published by the Canadian analysis firm Corporate Knights since 2005, and is based on an overall assessment of how a company handles issues concerning resource management, employees and financial management. Almost 5 000 companies took part.

“We are both proud and pleased to be on the Global 100 list as one of the most sustainable companies in the world,” said Lars Strömberg, director of sustainable and environmental affairs at Holmen. “Holmen has taken a focused approach to sustainability issues for many years now. Being recognised and ranked highly by leading analysts is an acknowledgement of this work.”

Meanwhile, Henrik Sjölund, president and CEO of both Holmen and Iggesund Paperboard, said the Global 100 ranking was the result of dedicated work and the strategic choices and investments the company had made for the future, which had reinforced its sustainability profile. “There is no doubt that the forest has good prospects as a raw material, especially amid a transition to a bio-economy in which products made from fossil raw materials are being replaced with renewable alternatives,” he said.

In a press note, Iggesund said that being included in the Global 100 was especially important for it because the company’s products, Invercote and Incada, were targeting the high-end packaging segment where a good track record in sustainability was a valuable asset.

“We have been ranked high on indices like the UN Global Compact Index, Carbon Disclosure Project, and now the Global 100,” said Johan Granås, sustainability communications manager at Iggesund Paperboard. “To repeatedly be acknowledged by these well renowned indices clearly shows that we are among the most sustainable companies in the world and is a recognition of the holistic and long term approach that characterizes our sustainability work.”

  • Iggesund expands services for Eastern Europe

Iggesund Paperboard—Europe’s third-largest manufacturer of high-quality virgin fiber paperboard—is expanding its services for Eastern Europe by establishing a new freight terminal in Riga, Latvia, as well as a sales office in Moscow, Russia, to boost Russian sales. Construction of the two new facilities is part of Iggesund’s long-term plan to cultivate its delivery services on a global scale.

“We need to be near the customer both in terms of deliveries and other services required by today’s customers,” says Rikard Papp, director Asia Pacific & Merchants Europe at Iggesund.

Iggesund will also take part for the second time in the RosUpack exhibition, which will be held June 16-19 in Moscow.

“The intense interest we met with last year convinced us that we should establish a sales office for the Russian market. It is a major market that definitely has room for a high-end product like [our flagship product] Invercote,” says Papp.

Iggesund Paperboard’s terminal in Riga became operation in April, and the sales office in Moscow will be inaugurated in July.

  • Iggesund expands its presence in North America

Iggesund Paperboard is expanding its distribution in the United States by making its flagship product, Invercote, available from coast to coast. The company has established an inventory position and sheeting capabilities in Pomona, California, USA, with the objective of making its flagship product—which is already available in more than 100 countries—readily available for quick-turn market demand.

“We’ve been in the U.S. for more than 30 years, but our distribution footprint has been concentrated on the East Coast,” says Rickard Österlindh, president of Iggesund Americas. “Now is the time to increase our presence on the West Coast, where we know there is a density of brand owners who will appreciate the quality level we offer with Invercote.”

Invercote is a niche product in the United States and is manufactured using a multi-layer construction that prevents it from cracking on the fold, unlike many domestically produced paper and paperboard grades.

“Invercote’s unique attributes truly distinguish it from other products in the marketplace, and as such Iggesund will seek to identify applications where those properties add value,” says Österlindh. “That’s why we’re also reinforcing our U.S. sales organization by recruiting people who can help increase sales both in areas where we had no previous presence and those where we already have a position.”

Iggesund will focus its sales and marketing efforts on premium packaging and graphical print applications, building on a previously established foundation of offset and digital print business.

The company’s enhanced distribution efforts in the U.S. are part of Iggesund’s goal to become a unified global entity by strengthening its service platform outside Europe.
