Dutch Researchers Alarmed that Teens Wake to Vape

A new Dutch study reports unusually high levels of nicotine dependence among secondary school pupils, with more than one-third of teenage smokers saying they wake up at night because they need nicotine. The research, published in the European Journal of Pediatrics, surveyed 978 students across five schools and found that 396 had smoked or vaped in the past year and 183 used nicotine daily. Most began around age 13 and often progressed to cigarettes, which researchers said highlights the need for stronger limits on youth access.

Doctors involved in the study said night-time vaping is a clear marker of addiction and warned that many parents remain unaware their children smoke. Addiction expert Reinout Wiers of the University of Amsterdam told de Volkskrant he was surprised by the extent of night-time use, calling it “alarming.”

The findings coincide with a new government anti-vaping campaign, amid repeated warnings from lung specialists as severe vaping-related medical cases emerge in the Netherlands. Other research has found that some youth-favored vapes contain toxic metals, carcinogenic chemicals, and nicotine levels above legal limits.

Ireland to Ban Tobacco and Vape Vending Machine Sales

Beginning today (September 29), Ireland will ban the sale of tobacco and nicotine inhaling products from self-service and vending machines under new rules contained in the Public Health (Tobacco Products and Nicotine Inhaling Products) Act 2023. Minister for Health Jennifer Carroll MacNeill said the measure will cut off a source of easy access for minors, calling it “another significant milestone” in the government’s tobacco control policy and Tobacco Endgame strategy.

Minister of State for Public Health, Wellbeing and the National Drug Strategy Jennifer Murnane O’Connor stressed that the legislation aims squarely to protect children. “We are cutting off an avenue of easy access that has been shown to contribute to early experimentation and long-term addiction,” she said, adding that prevention is central to building a healthier Ireland. The Health Service Executive confirmed that Environmental Health Officers will conduct nationwide inspections to monitor compliance.

The measure aligns Ireland with two-thirds of Parties to the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, which recommends banning vending machine sales as a form of advertising and promotion.

Study Warns Flavored Nicotine May Be More Addictive

Certain nicotine flavors could be more addictive than others, according to researchers from the Yale School of Medicine, who found that rats preferred the combination of flavorings and nicotine to just the flavorings or unflavored nicotine on their own. The study suggests that sweeteners play a greater role in nicotine preference for females, while flavors are more influential for males.

Published in the journal Nicotine & Tobacco Research, the effects of the sweeteners sucrose and saccharin, as well as the commonly used flavor additive cinnamaldehyde (the principal chemical of cinnamon) in nicotine were tested on rats. Female rats showed the highest nicotine preference when combined with sucrose, while males preferred nicotine combined with cinnamon. They also found menthol flavoring increases oral nicotine intake in male rats but not in females.

The study says that although flavors do not significantly impact nicotine absorption, they significantly influence user satisfaction and increase the likelihood that people will continue using nicotine products.
