19 AGs Urge F1 to Ban Nicotine Sponsorships

A coalition of attorneys general from 19 states and jurisdictions has urged Formula 1 and the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) to end all sponsorships involving tobacco and nicotine products, including nicotine pouches. In a letter sent June 8, the coalition argued that nicotine-related sponsorships connected to Formula 1 teams and events could expose younger audiences to marketing for addictive products and undermine longstanding public health efforts aimed at reducing youth nicotine use.

The letter cites Formula 1’s growing youth audience and increasing reach through social media, streaming platforms, and partnerships with consumer brands as factors heightening concern over nicotine product promotion. The coalition also referenced the 1998 Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement and noted that more than 160 public health organizations made a similar appeal earlier this year, calling on Formula 1 to eliminate tobacco- and nicotine-related sponsorships from the sport.

BAT Pulls Pouches from France, Criticizes Debateless Ban

BAT France said it has stopped marketing nicotine pouches nationwide as of April 1, complying with a government decree issued on Sept. 5, 2025 that entered into force this week. The company confirmed it is withdrawing the products from sale in line with the regulation.

At the same time, BAT France criticized the move as a regulatory ban adopted without parliamentary debate, arguing it runs counter to harm-reduction strategies and France’s goal of a “tobacco-free generation” by 2032. The company said the decision comes amid ongoing European discussions over revisions to the Tobacco Excise Directive and evaluation of the Tobacco Products Directive, and pledged to continue advocating for what it called a science-based, proportionate framework while focusing on vaping products for adult smokers.

Vietnam to Ban E-Cigarette and Heated Tobacco Investments

Vietnam plans to ban all investment and business activities related to electronic cigarettes and heated tobacco products in a move aimed at protecting public health. The proposal, discussed at the National Assembly’s 50th Standing Committee session, is part of a broader revision of the Investment Law to simplify project approvals and update prohibited business sectors.

Deputy Finance Minister Nguyễn Thị Bích Ngọc said the draft law would restrict prior approval to sensitive projects, including those affecting national security, the environment, or major infrastructure. The ban aligns with Resolution 173 adopted in November 2024, which calls for a nationwide prohibition on the production, trade, import, storage, transportation, and use of e-cigarettes, heated tobacco, and other addictive substances.

Lawmakers welcomed the reforms while recommending limited exceptions for exports, scientific research, medical use, or national defense. If passed, the measure would mark Vietnam’s strongest action yet against new forms of tobacco, reinforcing the country’s commitment to public health amid the global surge in vaping and heated tobacco use.
